Nomenclature Gude (1913: 292) considered this species to be a junior secondary homonym of Bulimus pusillus Brongniart, 1810 [not Brard as given by Gude], since he classified both species in the genus Paludestrina. He introduced Paludestrina Newtoni as replacement name.
At present, Brongniart’s species is classified in Hydrobia (Tournoueria) (Pacaud & Le Renard 1995), while Eichwald’s species is attributed to Caspiohydobia (Kantor & Sysoev 2006). Therefore, Paludestrina newtoni Gude, 1913 is a junior objective synonym of Caspiohydobia pusilla (Eichwald, 1838).
Golikov & Starobogatov (1866: 353, fig. 1 (4)) introduced Pyrgohydrobia eichwaldiana as new species. Aware of the homonymy (but not of Gude’s replacement name), they considered P. pusilla Eichwald, 1838 as synonymous. Note also that they erroneously attributed the senior homonym to Basterot (1825), who only recombined Brongniart’s species with Paludina. Since Golikov & Starobogatov (1866) did not establish P. eichwaldiana as replacement name (and based it on a different type specimen), it is not a junior objective synonym of P. pusilla Eichwald, 1838.
