Taxonomy This name has been dismissed by Bowden & Heppell (1966: 121) as preoccupied by Plagiostoma sulcata Lamarck, 1819, but this is not a primary homonym. Nevertheless there is also some uncertainty regarding whether this name should apply to Limatula subauriculata (Montagu, 1808) as suggested by Forbes & Hanley (1849) or to Limatula gwyni (Sykes, 1903) as suggested by Bowden & Heppell (1966). It should be noted that the original description includes in the synonymy Pecten suborbiculatus [sic], a misspelling of Pecten subauriculatus but with the correct reference to the description p. 63, pl. 29 fig. 2. Therefore, Lima sulcata could be made an objective synonym of the latter by an appropriate lectotype or neotype designation [details]
