Taxonomy The earlier name Arca patriarchalis (Röding, 1798) has been put forward by Huber (2010: 560) as the valid name to be used for this species. However that name has never been used otherwise as in the catalogue of names by Sherborn (1920) which does not count as an instance of usage under the provisions of ICZN art. 23.9, so that the name Arca avellana lfulfills the conditions to be declared "nomen protectum" against the older name Arca patriarchalis “nomen oblitum”.
