Nomenclature A recent molecular study (Sirna Terranova, Lo Brutto, Arculeo & Mitton, 2007) reveals that the Red Sea and Mediterranean populations, the East African populations and a population from Hong Kong represent three cryptic species of Brachidontes. This implies separating the Red Sea B. pharaonis from the East African B. variabilis and using both names. Mytilus variabilis Krauss, 1848 is a primary homonym of Mytilus variabilis Fischer von Waldheim, 1807 but Cosel et al. (2014) declared the former nomen protectum and the latter (a subjective junior synonym of Mytilus edulis Linnaeus, 1758), nomen oblitum.
A still older name is Mytilus ustulatus Lamarck, 1819, which is used by Huber (2010) for the whole complex. There is currently an established usage of the name Brachidontes ustulatus for a Western Australian species, and in view of the findings of Sirna Terranova et al., all three names (ustulatus, variabilis and pharaonis) are here listed as "accepted".
