Blurb. Polychaetes are strongly represented in the Australian region (within Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone, its islands and the Australian Antarctic Territory) where 67 of 81 families known worldwide are recorded. Several of the unrecorded families are pelagic, and are included because they occur in New Zealand; however, these 14 families have little import globally, representing in all less than 0.7% of all polychaete species. In this context, the present treatment of Polychaeta is the most comprehensive account ever published. Its focus is Australian, but the volume has strong international relevance through inclusion of 83% of polychaete families and liberal use of appropriate extralimital examples.
