Begins: ""The marine animals, described in the following pages, were collected in the months of February, March and April, 1887. During this time, as a guest of Mr. A. Hemenway of Boston, I carried on studies at Santa Barbara and the neighboring island of Santa Cruz, at Monterey and the city of Santa Cruz. My attention was especially turned to the Medusae of these regions, and a few observations were made on certain novel genera of other invertebrated animals."
