Taxonomy Warén (1984, Journal of Molluscan Studies, suppl. 13: 66) followed earlier authors in regarding Polygireulima Sacco, 1892 as the valid name for the preoccupied Acicularia Monterosato, 1884. However, Sacco did not establish Polygireulima as a substitute name for Acicularia (which he used as a valid name), but as a new subgenus; see Pras, 2013, Cossmanniana, 15: 99. Crinophtheiros Bouchet & Warén (1986), whose type species is a subjective synonym of the type species of Acicularia, is the correct substitute. [details]
