Status Limacina cucullata Gould, 1852 was synonymised with L. rangii f. antarctica Woodward, 1854 by van der Spoel (1967) and the name has not since been used because it is junior to L. rangii d’Orbigny, 1835. Recently, Limacina antarctica Woodward, 1854 was recognised as a distinct species (Vidal-Miralles et al., 2024) for which, following the synonymy proposed by van der Spoel, Limacina cucullata Gould, 1852 would be an earlier name. However, this synonymy requires further consideration as there are some inconsistencies in Gould’s figure of L. cucullata in relation to this (Giada Spagliardi pers. com.). Since there is evidently no type material available, these inconsistencies are difficult to resolve. Further investigation is needed in order to clarify whether Limacina cucullata Gould, 1852 should rather be regarded as a nomen dubium. In the meantime it is best considered a taxon inquirendum.
