Status According to Lycett, the name Cylindrites was used by Llwhyd [pre-Linnean; not seen]. Sowerby (1824, The mineral conchology of Great Britain, 5: 77), under Acteon cuspidatus Sowerby, 1824, stated: "It has been proposed to form a new genus of it, to be called Cylindrites, but the following species having a conical spire, connects it with Acteon noae". Sowerby did not use Cylindrites as valid, and under Art. 11.5.2 Cylindrites is thus not made available. Lycett (1848) explicitly proposed to "restore the forgotten Cylindrites", provided a diagnosis, but did not include any nominal species. Morris & Lycett (1850, Palaeontographical Society Monographs, 4(9): 97) declared Cylindrites a new genus. See also Rugalindrites[details]
